History of 413 South 7th Street
![]() The earliest known photograph in which the house can be seen is in this photograph that was taken on August 15, 1867. This photograph, from the Sangamon Valley Collection, was taken looking southeast from a point near 6th & Monroe Streets, and was intended to be taken of the construction of the old Springfield Post Office. The post office building under construction in the photograph was later demolished for the construction of the replacement Post Office and Federal Courts building (now Federal Court building only), in 1929. The building in the photograph located on Monroe Street directly to the east of the Post Office is the old American House Hotel stables. At the northwest corner of 7th & Market streets (now 7th & Capitol streets), the then new Third (now First) Presbyterian church can be seen. Note the two original church spires, which were later almost completely removed.
